A beautiful mind
“I cannot waste time with these classes and these books, memorizing the weaker assumptions of lesser mortals! I need to look through to the governing dynamics, find a truly original idea. That’s the only way I’ll ever distinguish myself. It’s the only way that I’ll ever… matter”
As an Economics Major this film was particularly evocative. It was hard to watch someone struggling with trying to find meaning in their life through theorems and equations. I never found any in such subject matter.
Thankfully, my association with Economics was more vocational than academic and I have suffered no long-term damage from my studies. This semi-biopic highlights the challenges of being different in a conformative society and how the human psyche might protect itself from such a hostile environment.
It seems entirely strange that society at large wants to enjoy all the benefits it reaps from such extraordinary individuals and yet does not deem it necessary to bestow upon them all the courtesies and considerations it confers upon itself. Such is life.

By Zeus and all the gods, what makes you so much better than them, Cassander? Better than you really are! In you and those like you is this!
