The Story of Singapore

“I ignore polling as a method of government. I think that shows a certain weakness of mind - an inability to chart a course whichever way the wind blows, whichever way the media encourages the people to go, you follow. If you can’t force or are unwilling to force your people to follow you, with or without threats, you are not a leader.”
— Lee Kuan Yew

Singapore is a miracle which is the brainchild of two men: Raffles and Lee Kuan Yew. Raffles laid the foundation and more than a hundred years later, Lee Kuan Yew picked up the reins and made it into the modern wonder that we all know and admire.

This book is both a journey of how Singapore progressed from a third world port to a first world country as well as a semi-autobiographical tale of the man who made it all possible. LKY’s determination to make Singapore great shines through each page.

I picked up this book right after LKY passed away. I should have read it years ago; before I went to Singapore and got to know the people of Singapore. Reading it afterwards, this book gave me the clarity to understand my experiences, to truly appreciate them.
