High Fantasy at its finest

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us”
— Gandalf

The Lord of the Rings was written in a different time for a different audience. One who could read between the lines, drawing from experience as well as counsel, and understand the absolute beauty of the LOTR. An audience who also liked poems and songs in their high fantasy.

Unlike the movies, the books need sufficient time for reading and rereading to fully grasp all that is being communicated. This is not a book that can be read while commuting or a few pages each day before falling asleep. It is exacting reading, akin to scaling a daunting mountain.

I once took a week off, away from the minutiae of everyday life, to sit quietly, read, and absorb the wonder of Tolkien’s work in all its fullness. It remains one of my fondest memories and I would very much like to do it again one day. Some things are only understood with the passage of time.
