All Manor of countryside comedy
When you have a top-notch cast of actors and equally first-rate characters for them to play, you can pretty much place them in any situation and laughter will follow. Here the cast of Are You Being Served? are set with running a manor house as a country hotel.
Several years have passed and they are not the force they once were; made weak by time and fate, but strong in will; determined to turn the manor house they have received as their retirement benefit into a successful, profit-making establishment.
There is something very idyllic about the notion of retiring to the countryside, being closer to nature, and somehow maintaining a regular flurry of visitors and interesting happenings. This in many ways could be called the English Dream.
“Family meeting! Family meeting!”
— Dick Solomon
“Bernard, I have served eleven governments in the past thirty years.
If I had believed in all their policies, I would have been passionately committed to keeping out of the Common Market, and passionately committed to going into it…
… A nationalisation freak and a privatisation maniac; but above all, I would have been a stark-staring, raving schizophrenic.”
— Sir Humphrey Appleby
“Education in this country is a disaster. We’re supposed to be preparing children for a working life. Three quarters of the time they’re bored stiff!”
”Well I should have thought that being bored stiff for three quarters of the time was an excellent preparation for working life.”
— Jim Hacker & Sir Humphrey
