The King that Abdicated

“I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.”
— Edward VIII

There is no royal road to love. No royal road to finding it, recognizing it, or keeping it. It is less like taking a road less travelled and more like jumping off a cliff and building your wings on the way down. Maybe you succeed, maybe you don’t. The important thing is to try.

Most of us would balk at those odds and rightly so. Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, more commonly known as Edward VIII, decided to take his chances. He abdicated the throne of the British Empire, married Wallis Simpson, and they shared many happy years together.

Would someone else do the same? Would anyone else do the same? Are unearned possessions and false honors truly what life is really worth? Edward VIII acted on good conscience and did what he felt was right even if it meant giving up the crown. This was a man, a King that really was a King.
